The pueblo’s population fluctuated rapidly as silver and gold were mined intermittently between the 1600s and the 1930s, and currently has only 600 residents maintaining its true colonial heritage.

San Sebastian now cultivates coffee and agave in its lush mountainsides while maintaining its quaint cobblestone plaza, elegant snow-white buildings, classic Porfirian bandstand, 18th-century church, and historic haciendas, recently earning this pueblo the title of Pueblo Magico from the federal government.
